Jeff Walters for Leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party

This morning, Jeff Walters officially announced his candidacy for the leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party.

Now, some of you may be asking yourselves “why”? To be leader of a party is a substantial commitment. Why would Jeff want to put himself through that?

His answer is one word: BELIEF!

Jeff believes in the endless possibilities of Saskatchewan. There is so much potential here. But we are being held back. Many people feel that there is no place for their voice to be heard. That they don’t belong. That our politics is broken.

But he also believes that when we band together in common cause, the impossible becomes possible. When we cooperate and find consensus, irrespective of race, class, gender, or creed, we can build a better society. Together, we can bring Saskatchewan into a new era.

So, what does this new era look like?

First, Jeff believes that it is time for our province to take the necessary steps to aggressively pursue a plan to transition toward a Green Economy. Now this does not mean immediate draconian measures to kill jobs and industries. A transition is just that: to gradually shift to green technologies and energy over the next 10-15 years. The future is now.

Second, he believes that we make a concerted attempt to diversify our economy and not rely exclusively on the undue influence and power of just a handful industries. With this in mind, he supports exploring other industries for expansion. One such sector is Film and Culture. Jeff proposes not to just reinstate the Film Tax Credit but to support a path towards a Modern Film Industry in Saskatchewan.

Third, he believes that health care in Saskatchewan has significantly eroded in services and availability. The age of COVID has only exacerbated this problem. He is a strong advocate for providing the resources necessary to train and hire new health care professionals to help bridge the gap. Individual and family in our province deserves access to the best care available.

Fourth, Jeff believes that access to quality education is the key to a fair and equal society. This means that we must do everything we can to ensure that all children and teachers have access and resources they need and our post-secondary graduates can go into their prospective careers without the unneeded stress of drowning in student loan debt. He proposes a fundamental reassessment of our educations system from top to bottom. Our communities deserve nothing but the best.

Fifth, Jeff believes that Gender Equality promotes social and economic progress through fair and equal treatment of citizens. A society is only as strong as its equality between all its people. Everyone deserves to exercise their fundamental rights and freedoms openly in a free and fair society.

And finally, he believes that all races and cultural groups be treated with dignity and respect as well as have access to all our society has to offer. In particular, our Indigenous Communities. Jeff will work collaboratively with our Indigenous communities and other levels of government to implement the TRC’s Calls to Action. We cannot change the past, but we can ensure that our future is the best that it can be for all. In fact, it is our moral obligation to do so.

Together we can do many great things. We can create the kind of modern forward-looking province people of Saskatchewan desire. All we have to do is unite in common cause and effort.

Together, let’s create a movement to help bring the province into a new era for the benefit of our families and every family in Saskatchewan!
